Our recent trip to Koubad farm was unique in so many respects. Accomodations consisted of luxury, self contained thatched African “rondavels” with en suite full service bathrooms and satellite TV, no less. Oh, and full laundry service. Such things can be found elsewhere on the globe, but in the remote bushveld of Northern Zululand? Not so much. Game drives to view Giraffe, majestic Kudu, Black Wildebeest, Blesbuck, Impala and Warthog are followed by cocktails on the spacious deck attached to the main lodge overlooking the white water rapids of the Pivaan river. Add to this exotic dishes featuring top notch South African cuisine and you have a combination which even to the most jaded jet setter can only be described as, well, unique. Many thanks to the Claire and Amo Jordaan, as well as Patricia and Danie van Niekerk, for a vacation we will never forget. We look forward to our next visit,…

There is no other heavenly place on earth like the one I experienced this past summer. It’s funny that a small, remote, yet self-sufficient farm outside Durban, South Africa truly makes the green and conservative trends of diet in the Los Angeles area seem pathetic. Each day consists of waking up and seeing free roaming animals in every direction, sipping cold drinks under the shade of the blazing African sun during a mid-day break in safari, and devouring freshly slaughtered meat with masterfully cooked meals in the stunning main hall. While Koubad might seem a bit remote, each room is installed with satellite TV, a full kitchen and bathroom, a personal fireplace and a daily laundry service. The attention to detail and warm and welcoming personality of the staff leaves me excited and anticipating my next trip!
